Sunday 6 September
23rd Sunday in Ordinary time
It might be thought that in contemporary culture where image and appearance are emphasised through mass media and clever advertising, determining how people look has become the normal way of judging their worth. It is significant therefore that James can warn the Christians of his time against such behaviour, because judging worth simply by appearance is ubiquitous. Social standing, success and importance are marked by external signs, which are its manifestations. James insists it is being rich in faith and loving God that matters, and – as his letter continues next week – it is not external signs but effective action that reveals the true identity of the ‘heirs to the kingdom’.
