Mary, Mother of God – Solemnity
Psalm 66.2-3, 5, 6, 8
Today’s feast – Mary, Mother of God – is of ancient pedigree. The feast appropriately opens our civil calendar. Its Greek title Theotokos [God-bearer] is used especially in the Orthodox Churches. It was decreed by the Council of Ephesus in 431. But I would like to suggest another title for Mary: Mary the Prophet. For Luke, Mary is first and foremost a prophet – one who ponders the word of God before proclaiming it.
